bREWED CAFE
Concept:
Different customers are siphoned into the open/semi-open and closed spaces depending on their circumstances. It is taken that large families will need visibility towards the play area and garden for safe supervision. Youngsters casually meeting will find comfort in intimate environments so they can laugh, gossip and meet further friends via serendipitous encounters through glimpses between the bookshelves, gallery partitions and outside. Freelancers requiring a focused environment to work are placed in quieter areas with views to the gardens.
Ambience:
Natural and locally sourced materials such as rammed earth have been specified to lower the carbon impact and create a soothing atmosphere free from toxic chemicals from the nearby motorway which may get busier with the increased traffic towards high-tech developments. The climate in Pune is hot all year-round, rammed earth offers a consistent coolness and shelter. It also acts as an acoustic barrier blocking noise to quiet areas. The glazed areas are orientated towards the North to avoid overheating.
Aesthetic:
The curved roof radiates out of the centre reflecting the wayfinding movement and natural surroundings of Pune. The ancient tradition of coffee drinking and making versus new trends of the coffee shop rammed earth construction is also ancient and relates the earth where the plant is grown. In contrast to the lush surroundings of the earth and the park, metal vertical solar shading louvres and the curtain wall evokes a clean-cut environment and relates to these new trends through a modern style.
Honourable mention competition entry.
